The Broadsword class assault carrier did not see action in the Second Sabor War, but its development brought about a new line of thinking from Galacia Designs. Normally, Galacia Designs ships were crude, cramped, and not very innovative. Until the coronation of Constantine VII, Galacia Designs, being a subsidiary of the Energy Consortium, fell under very little oversight. The ship building company had been more concerned with turning out ships in volume during a time of war. Galacia sent many ships into service, some only 70% complete. While the ships had vital systems, many secondary systems were left for the ship’s crew to complete. The company did this to try to save resources, figuring the ships would not last long anyway. This was something the new Emperor Constantine VII remedied very quickly once Admiral Owden made him aware of the shortcomings of new Galacia-built ships.
Proteus Designs, an independent ship builder, was producing some very tough, high quality, innovative ships that were proving themselves very well in battle, and well out performing Galacia Designs ships. In order for Galacia to stay on top and be the premiere ship builder for the Empire - a place it had enjoyed since the first days of the empire - it would have to keep pace not only with the Sabors but also with Proteus Designs. Since the Second Sabot war, Galacia had lost close to 50% of its market share too.
After the Second Sabor War, Galacia started a whole new ship building campaign. The Nebula and Behemoth classes were amongst the first new developments to come out of the Galacia shipyards. The Broadsword was the next to be seen. New improvements in fighters meant better air support for planetary landings. Many more worlds were taken in the Second Sabor War - worlds that were deeper in the Sabor Realm and were not given up easily. Many of these the Olympians were unable take due to being ill-prepared for Sabor resolve on their home worlds. New thinking in landing troops on the ground to minimize casualties was needed. A smaller, heavily armored carrier that could get into the heat of battle and perform well in deep space as well as in low planetary atmosphere to get assault troops on the ground fast was envisioned.
The Broadsword assault carrier was developed for multi-mission roles. It could perform well in the conventional battle fleet. It also had 8 different hangers that could be outfitted for many different mission options and flight craft. From fighters, bombers, to assault and landing craft, the Broadsword could support it all, as well their support personnel and assault personnel. The ship also had provisions for 1800 to 3000 landing forces. The ships could serve in thier own units and deliver high numbers of troops and craft into a battle. The ships, due to their hangers being able to be opened into one another, provided good cargo space for ferrying planes from one location in the empire to another. Many branches of the fleet have been very happy with how the Broadsword class has performed in the peacetime fleet. It performs well in exercises, in minor conflicts, and in exercises anticipating another major conflict. It was even rumored that Admiral Owden had been so impressed by the versatility of the class that he reallocated close to 30 of the carriers to his covert experimental programs.
