The Aggnarr Class escort carrier was an afterthought in engaging the Sabors in the Second Sabor War.  The military leadership of the empire was very slow to adopt carrier-based fighters in battle. Instead the leadership favored the ship to ship engagements where ships would duke it out between each other.

Carriers were not considered worthy of battle. They were instead used to transport troop landing craft and fighter craft to supply ground support for troop landings on planets. Carriers were also used to scout out systems with either manned fighter craft or scouting drones.

Carriers were caught between a void of technological achievements. Defensive fire ships were now able to take out incoming fighter craft, bombers, and missiles with deadly accuracy.  This made for ships duking it out from distances, causing a stagnation of battle tactic and technology. It was not until Admiral Owden utilized new missiles and fold-capable bombers that small craft could get dangerously close to the enemy to inflict heavy damage. This allowed the larger vessels to come in close to clean up. With the new advances in fighters and bombers, carriers became a new integral part of battle as distances closed and the speed of the battles accelerated.

Prior to Admiral Owden taking command of the fleet, escort carriers were used strictly for scouting and ferrying craft. Now they were having their weapons and planes upgraded. While they could not handle a full-on engagement, they were much better equipped to take up position on the outskirts of a battle to rapidly supply resources and reinforcements to the battle.

The potential in the Agnarr class carrier became well known when the carriers Formidable and Vigilance accompanied the battlecruiser Intrepid to lead the fleet to its first victory of the Second Sabor War.
